If audiences don’t care about the character or property being rebooted, they won’t care more because said character or property is being rebooted. Audiences generally flock to James Bond movies, Spider-Man movies and Batman movies, so it stands to reason that a new interpretation of said properties will have inherent moviegoer interest right off the bat. The very idea of a reboot, be it grimdark or not, is not in itself a selling point to the audience. It, along with Batman Begins, Star Trek and (my own criticism notwithstanding) The Amazing Spider-Man represent peak reboot potential and are why Hollywood keeps going back to said sandbox.īut what can we learn from these top-tier successes, as well from the less successful ones? Well, I’d argue there are three big lessons to be taken from the success of Casino Royale and applied to the reboot in general.įirst and foremost, make sure audiences have an interest in said IP or character being rebooted. But, for the purposes of this conversation, Casino Royale provides a helpful template in terms of doing the reboot just right. The film received rave reviews (it is still my favorite 007 film behind only GoldenEye) and earned a resounding $599 million worldwide on a $150m budget for Sony and related partners. It fashioned itself as a darker/grittier James Bond origin story/reboot. With series Daniel Craig taking on the mantle for the first time, Casino Royale retold the first (and never traditionally adapted for the big screen) Ian Fleming novel.

Yet, the producers wanted to step back from the brink of camp and make a more grounded James Bond franchise, which (to be fair) isn't that much different than when they offered For Your Eyes Only after Moonraker.
